The Mayodan Police Department hires qualified individuals for sworn positions as lateral entry applicants or entry level applicants. Individuals without neither previous law enforcement experience nor Basic Law Enforcement Certification are considered entry level applicants. Individuals who possess prior law enforcement experience or have their Basic Law Enforcement Certification are considered lateral entry applicants.

The starting salary for entry level applicants is competitive with other agencies in the area.

The starting salary for lateral entry applicants varies, depending upon the level of previous  law enforcement experience and their Basic Law Enforcement Certification status. 
Job Description

Performs protective service work involving a variety of general or support duty assignments often under emergency conditions and frequently involving considerable danger; and does related work as required.  

Essential tasks: effects arrest, prepares investigative reports, exercises independent judgment, operates a law enforcement vehicle, communicates coherently and effectively, pursues fleeing suspects, utilizes firearms, performs searches, conducts surveillance, and engages in law enforcement patrol functions.

The successful applicant must be able to perform ALL of the above functions, unassisted, and a pace and at level of performance consistent with the actual job performance  requirements.   This requires a high level of physical ability to include vision, hearing, speaking, flexibility, and strength.

Oral Interview and Fingerprint

Attend a professional, in-depth interview.  You will then be fingerprinted. 

Background Investigation

The background investigation is a fact-finding process to evaluate an applicant's suitability for police work. 

Conditional Job Offer

Once your background investigation has been completed, you may receive a conditional job offer.  The offer is contingent upon your successful completion of the physical examination, psychological interview, and firearms qualifications. 

Medical Physical Examination

The medical examination consists of a complete physical by a doctor of our choosing. 

Psychological Evaluation

A brief interview with the Law Enforcement Psychologist to determine suitability for law enforcement. 

Firearms Qualification

You will be taken to the firing range to qualify both a service handgun and shotgun.  You will be trained by state certified instructors on  safety, technique, and procedure. 

Formal Job Offer

Once you have successfully completed the application process, you may be selected to become a member of the Mayodan Police Department.
